Sogang House (소강고택)

Sogang House is a 100-year-old hanok located in Baraemi Village, Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and was built by Namho Kim Roe-sik, an independence activist, for his second son, Sogang Kim Chang-gi. There are six rooms, ranging from Sarangbang to Eosabang. Sarangbang contains two rooms and a daecheongmaru (wooden-floored hall), Seonbibang is the first room to see the sun in the morning, and Doryeongbang is the only ondol (underfloor heated) room built with red clay. All rooms have air conditioning, and as you exit the room, you are greeted by a beautiful garden with flowering trees.

Gwonjinsadaek House (권진사댁)

Gwonjinsadaek House is a magnificent historic house with a history of more than 130 years. Situated on a 1,300-pyeong plot, this magnificent historic house features a main building with 56 bays, an annex with 3 bays, and a gatehouse with 9 bays. Constructed from Chunyang pine (Geumgang pine), the buildings are situated in the courtyard after passing through the tall main gate. Centered around the wide horizontal Sarangchae (guest quarters), the study room (currently the Saesarangbang), formerly used for study, stands to the left in a cozy yet neat manner. The Anchae (main house) is located behind it.

Woljeonggyo Bridge, located in Gyo-dong, Gyeongju, was built during the Unified Silla period (AD 676-935), but was burnt down during the Joseon dynasty. Through historical research, the bridge was rebuilt in April 2018 to become the largest wooden bridge in Korea. According to Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms), the bridge was built during the 19th year of King Gyeongdeok’s reign (AD 760), connecting Wolseong and Namsan together. The historical research to rebuild the bridge lasted from November 26, 1984 to September 8, 1986, finding that the bridge was made with wood for the first time. The first rebuilding of the bridge was from 2008 to 2013 and the finishing touches were added from April 2016 to April 2018. Through this research and rebuilding process, future restoration of historical buildings have a better reference to use.

Gyeongjuhyanggyo Local Confucian School is located near Gyochon Hanok Village in Gyeongju. The surrounding areas, Gyochon, Gyori, and Gyodong, derive their names because of this school. Although the exact date of its original construction is unknown, Gyeongju Hyanggyo was renovated during the reign of King Seongjong of the Joseon Dynasty, modeled after Seoul’s Seonggyungwan National Academy. The buildings follow the typical Confucian layout of “hall in the front, shrine in the back.” While seowon were private academies, hyanggyo were public institutions. Although it no longer serves the educational purpose, every spring and autumn it hosts traditional Confucian rituals. It also offers cultural programs such as tea ceremonies, rice-cake pounding, and archery. From April to October it hosts traditional Korean-style demonstration weddings, where visitors can participate in the ceremonies for free.

Daereungwon Ancient Tombs are one of the most well-known sights in Gyeongju, a history park home to 23 small and large ancient tombs. The area is dotted with tranquil trails among the tombs like the largest tomb in Hwangnam-dong, Hwangnamdaechong Tomb; Cheonmachong Tomb, the place where Cheonmado, a saddle flap painting, was excavated from; and the tomb of King Michu, nicknamed the “Tomb of the Bamboo Warrior.”

Cheonmachong Tomb, excavated in 1973, has a x_height of 12.7 meters and a diameter of 50 meters. Its excavation unearthed many artifacts, such as the famous Gold Crown from Cheonmachong Tomb. Its name comes from Cheonmado, a mudguard saddle flap with a painting of a heavenly horse. Cheonmachong Tomb is the only tomb in the Daereungwon Ancient Tombs to be opened to the public.

The tomb is thought to have been constructed between the late 5th century and early 6th century. Artifacts excavated from the tomb include a gold crown, gold cap, gold waist belt, gold diadem, and gilt-bronze shoes worn by the buried. The gold crown, in particular, is known as the largest and the most elaborate of all gold crowns unearthed in Korea. The artifacts themselves can be found in Gyeongju National Museum, so don’t miss the chance to see them in person.

Another must-visit site is the Daereungwon Magnolia Photo Area, a lone magnolia tree standing between the beautiful curves of ancient tombs.

The Gyeongju Historic Area, registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage on November 2000, is an area that embodies the time-honored history and culture of Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom (57 BC-AD 935).

The Gyeongju Historic Area can be divided into 5 major sections. The first section is the Namsan Area, a treasure trove of Buddhist art masterpieces dating back to the Silla Kingdom. Gyeongju Namsan Mountain (often referred to as an ‘outdoor museum’) is home to many historical heritage sites from the Silla Kingdom. Major attractions include: Poseokjeong Pavilion Site (Historic Site), Rock-carved Buddhas in Tapgok Valley (Treasure), Three-story Stone Pagoda in Cheollyongsa Temple Site (Treasure), Rock-carved Buddhas at Chilburam Hermitage (Treasure), Rock-carved Seated Buddha in Bulgok Valley (Treasure), and 37 other Buddhist relics

The second section is the Wolseong Area, one of the former palace sites of the Silla Kingdom. The area consists of Gyerim Forest (Historic Site); Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond (Historic Site), a Silla Royal Palace site; and Cheomseongdae Observatory (National Treasure), the oldest observatory in Asia.

Daereungwon Ancient Tomb Complex, the third area, features a cluster of the royal graves of the kings and queens of Silla. Also in the same area are Ancient Tombs in Nodong-ri (Historic Site), Ancient Tombs in Noseo-ri (Historic Site), Ancient Tombs in Hwangnam-ri (Historic Site), and Five Royal Tombs (Historic Site), among others. Archaeologists have discovered a number of invaluable relics and historic items in this area such as Geumgwan (golden crown), Cheonmado (a painting of flying horses), and numerous pottery pieces. These finds are perhaps the greatest clues into the life of the people of the Silla dynasty.

Area number four, the Hwangnyongsa Temple Site, is where the former site of the Hwangnyongsa Temple (Historic Site) and Bunhwangsa Stone Pagoda are located. Last is the Sanseong Area, housing remnants of the major defense system for the capital city. The site consists of Myeonghwalsanseong Fortress (Historic Site) which is estimated to be around 400 years old.

The Gyeongju Historic Area has a total of 52 designated cultural assets that are registered as World Cultural Heritages.

Yangjindang (하회 양진당)

Located in Hahoe Village, Andong, Hahoe Yangjindang House is the main ancestral home of the Pungsan Ryu clan, designated as a national treasure, and is also known as Ipam Gotaek. It is special for the coexistence of the Sarangchae, which features Goryeo architectural styles, and the Anchae, which maintains Joseon architectural styles. Seongamjae (성암재)

Seongamjae is a tranquil hanok located in Chunyang-myeon, Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It is the former residence of Seongam Kang Seung-won, the son of independence activist Uijae Kang Pil, and is a traditional hanok built in 1915 using Geumgang pine. It offers a special traditional house experience. The main house consists of the main bedroom, a main hall, two other rooms, and a storehouse, separated by an inner courtyard. Welcome coffee or tea is provided. Additionally, a diverse breakfast menu is offered, including salad, bread, rice cakes, and coffee. Various attractions are located nearby. There is a public bath with good water quality just 3 minutes away.

Unmunsa Temple in Cheongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do belongs to Cheongdo-gun in terms of administrative district. However, it is actually more closely connected to Daegu in terms of traffic and lifestyle. Unmunsa Temple was built in 560 during the Silla period. This ancient temple features seven treasured artifacts including the Weeping Pine Tree (Natural Monument No. 180) and stone lantern. Jukdo Market in Pohang began over 50 years ago as a cluster of street stalls in what was once a reed-filled wetland near the inner harbor. Since the 1970s, there has been a chicken alley in Andong Old Market where both raw chicken and fried chicken are sold. But, as seasoned spicy chicken became popular, merchants in the chicken alley needed to find a solution and this is how a fusion dish called Andong jjimdak, or braised chicken, was born. The dish is cooked with the seasoning of braised galbi and boiled down after adding glass noodles and different vegetables. Its sweet and spicy flavors, inexpensive price and abundant amount made the dish an instant hit nationwide, and “Chicken Alley” naturally changed its name to “Jjimdak Alley.” Today, there are some 30 stores in business on this street that attract over 20,000 tourists on weekends. Although Andong jjimdak is not a traditional dish that has been passed down for generations, “Suun Japbang” and “Eumsik Dimibang,” a pair of the oldest cooking books in Korea, talk about a cooking method that seems similar to that of Andong jjimdak in the Andong region from a long time ago. Andong jjimdak is protein-rich and contains vitamins and various nutrients from different types of vegetables, which makes it a nutritionally sound dish as well.

Imcheonggak House is the largest remaining household from the Joseon dynasty, holding a history of over 500 years. The house was built for one aristocratic family’s love of the scenic beauty in the surrounding area. It was originally built with a total of 99 kan (traditional measurement of space between pillars) but only 70 remain. The most famous structure on this property is the annexed pavilion, Gunjajeong. An autograph of the famous Confucian scholar Lee Hwang can be found hanging outside the pavilion.

Designated National Treasure No.16, Sinsedong Chilcheung Jeontap is Korea’s oldest and largest stone pagoda.

The pagoda measures 16.8 meters high with a x_width of 7.75 meters. The pagoda was originally built at Beopeungsa Temple during the eighth century of the Unified Silla Kingdom [654-935] and is the only remaining relic from the temple.

The pagoda is presently located on the estate of the head house of the Goseong Lee family. The sangryunbu, the ornamental top portion of the pagoda, has been totally lost, but the lower tiered portions are intact with beautiful carvings of Buddhist tutelary deity. Traces of tiled roof were found on each story of the tower. Historical records show that the tower was rebuilt in 1487 and that around the same period, three parts of the temple remained.
