Damyeonjae (담연재)

Damyeonjae is a hanok accommodation located in Hahoe Village, Andong. It was built in the 1980s but faithfully implemented the appearance of a traditional hanok. The chimney rising behind the yard and the tiles which line the roof are excellent enough to be considered a cultural asset, and the wood used for the beams and the cheongmaru is also very luxurious. Uniquely, it was built in a ‘c’ shape with the gate and haengnangchae moved to the edge of the yard, rather than a square shape like the traditional hanok in the Gyeongsang region. Thanks to the open view to the south, the entire Andong Hahoe Village and Hwasan Mountain can be viewed from the yard. Damyeonjae is the home of Korean actor Ryu Si-won, and his is known to have spent his childhood here. In 1999, Queen Elizabeth II of England experienced Korean culture and received a 73rd birthday award here, making it even more famous. Damyeonjae is currently operated as a hanok stay where only one group can stay each day. The kitchen and bathroom are modernly decorated to add convenience.

Garam Choyeonjae stands within Hahoe Traditional Village in a loop of the beautiful Nakdonggang River in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Among Hahoe’s tile-roofed old houses, this one’s thatched roof stands out. ‘Garam’ was the pen name of the owner’s grandfather – a descendant of the Joseon scholar Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong – while ‘Choyeonjae’ means a thatched house where swallows live. The swallows’ nest is still there under the eaves, and sunset views from the wooden terrace of the sarangchae (men’s house) are a dreamy experience. Visitors can also learn about traditional technologies such as treadmills and millstones.

⊙ Yangjindang/ 하회 양진당

An unusual feature is the incorporation of two different architectural styles: the sarangchae is in the Goryeo style, while the anchae is in the Joseon style. The rooms are simple and elegant, with antique mother-of-pearl cupboards, tableware cabinets, and ceramics placed here and there add to the old-time charm. Guests can enjoy traditional folk games, or have a go at home-brewing or making rice cakes and sweets.

The main house or Anchae has a wooden porch while the Sarangchae (men’s house) shares a central living space. Windows are lined in the traditional way with hanji paper, and opening them lets in a cooling breeze and reveals the beautiful surrounding landscape. The wood-fired Red Clay sauna room is very popular, but visitors need to make a reservation at least two days in advance to get the furnace started. Rooms have AC installed (additional fees in summer).

Guestrooms include the former sarangbang (studies) called Bukchonyugeo, Sarang and Susinwa, as well as attic rooms and kitchens. In the yard is an exquisite 300-year-old pine tree resembling the curve the Nakdong River makes round Hahoe village. All rooms have a private bathroom, and one incorporates a sauna. Starlit and moonlit evenings in Hahoe refresh both mind and body, and by crossing the river by ferry boat and climbing Buyongdae Cliff, visitors can enjoy panoramas of the historic village and beautiful Nakdong valley.
Healing Stay Kosmos is located at the edge of a cliff next to Songgotsan Mountain in Ulleungdo Island. The exterior is in a spiral shape, reflecting the trajectories of the sun and moon. The six-vault structure, which extends outward in a spiral shape from the center of the building, is the most essential element—each of the vaults form an independent space inside. Due to the spiral shapes, the entrance to the vaults temporarily blocks the landscape outside; however, as the guest enters further into the vault, the view to the surrounding landscape gradually opens up, and each vault reveals a unique view. This allows every guest to naturally immerse themselves into the hotel’s beautiful architecture and the surrounding landscape. The hotel also observes strict hygiene and disinfection to ensure the safety and convenience of guests. The maintains the cleanliness of every room and bedding every day. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the hotel staff regularly ventilate and disinfect all facilities and a designated disinfection and quarantine manager strictly monitors the staff’s compliance with the social distancing manual. The hotel also provides a complimentary healing kit, which includes a hand sanitizer (as well as a trekking map and specialty snacks from Ulleongdo Island), to all guests.

Cheonmachong Tomb, excavated in 1973, has a x_height of 12.7 meters and a diameter of 50 meters. Its excavation unearthed many artifacts, such as the famous Gold Crown from Cheonmachong Tomb. Its name comes from Cheonmado, a mudguard saddle flap with a painting of a heavenly horse. Cheonmachong Tomb is the only tomb in the Daereungwon Ancient Tombs to be opened to the public.

The tomb is thought to have been constructed between the late 5th century and early 6th century. Artifacts excavated from the tomb include a gold crown, gold cap, gold waist belt, gold diadem, and gilt-bronze shoes worn by the buried. The gold crown, in particular, is known as the largest and the most elaborate of all gold crowns unearthed in Korea. The artifacts themselves can be found in Gyeongju National Museum, so don’t miss the chance to see them in person.

Hwangnidan Street was originally known as “Hwangnam Keungil” near Poseok-ro, Hwangnam-dong. Its name comes from the combination of Hwangnam-dong and Gyeongnidan Street in Itaewon, Seoul, meaning the “Gyeongnidan Street of Hwangnam-dong.” The street is home to numerous restaurants, cafes, photo studios, and shops housed in traditional hanok buildings, making it popular among the younger generations in Korea. The street also demonstrates newtro aesthetics due to the remaining old and worn buildings built during the 1960s and the ’70s. Hwangnidan Street is near Cheomseongdae Observatory, Daereungwon Ancient Tombs, and other major tourist sites, allowing the street to become a popular Gyeongju attraction as well.

Sugyeongsa is a fusion Korean food restaurant renovated from a temple and a pond. The entrance is paved with marble and stone, creating a mysterious yet neat atmosphere, and the interior is simple, preserving the original form of a hanok and using white tones. The signature dish here is beef bulgogi with lotus leaf rice. The soy sauce-seasoned Gyeongju beef bulgogi, and lotus leaf rice will work up an appetite. The lotus leaf rice is a combination of rice and mixed grains wrapped in lotus leaves and steamed for an even healthier taste. Seasonal vegetables and side dishes are also provided. Also on the menu are Daereungwon deep-fried cheese, made with cheese rind, and beef brisket japchae pasta with seven kinds of vegetables, perilla seeds, and lotus root chips. A delicious meal can be enjoyed by anyone thanks to the restaurant’s reinterpretation of traditional Korean food.
