Hapyeonghaebyeon Beach (하평해변(동해))

Hapyeonghaebyeon Beach is a tranquil beach with a shallow shore lined with pine groves. The beach is only 20 minutes away on foot and 10 minutes’ ride from Donghae Express Bus Terminal, making it a great beach destination for family vacationers and tourists. The 20-meter wide shoreline is 200 meters in lenth, all covered with white sand. The beach also has rocks along the coast that act as a natural breakwater, preventing rough waves from entering the shore, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for swimming.

Donganjae is a hanok-style pension built of pinewood and red clay and located in Donghae-si, Gangwon-do. All rooms are ondol-heated and equipped with a shower booth and bidet, and offer scenic views from the numaru floor. The hanok uses geothermal heating (from 150 metres underground) which makes the rooms warm and cozy. Residents can bathe their feet in the fountain in the middle of the yard, and enjoy a morning walk on the pine tree trail behind the house. Donganjae is conveniently located a 10-minute walk from the Donghae City Bus Terminal.

Cheongok Golden Bat Cave in Donghae is the only natural cave in Korea located in a downtown area. Estimated to have been created 400 to 500 million years ago, the cave is known to serve as a habitat for the endangered golden bats. The cave’s total length stretches for 1,510 meters, with only 810 meters of the cave open to the public while the rest of cave remains protected for preservation purposes. The cave features ceiling craters, one of which is the longest in Korea, along with stalactite curtains, travertine terraces, stalactite cascades, and many other fantastic rock formations. The cave’s unique features provide a grand spectacle for tourists and great speleological samples for researchers. A 785-meter walkway was made using the sinkhole created by dissolved limestone to help visitors get a better understanding of cave formations.

Pencil Museum, located in Donghae, is the first museum in Korea dedicated to pencils and has a collection of over 3,000 pencils from 100 countries worldwide. The exhibition consists of a pencil history corner and a themed exhibition that displays art pencils and character pencils. The museum also has an experience center where visitors can test out different kinds of pencils and a dedicated collection exhibit area. The 4th floor consists of an art shop and a cafe where one can enjoy the view of the East Sea.
