Constructed over a 16-month period from 1931 to 1932, the undersea tunnel in Tongyeong is Asia’s first submarine tunnel. For its construction, the sea water was blocked at both ends, the tunnel was dug underground, and was paved with concrete. The Korean word “Yongmundalyang” engraved at the entrance of this 483-meter long, 5-meter wide tunnel means “the entrance of an undersea tunnel that connects island to land.”

The Jeon Hyuck Lim Museum of Art is located on the way to Yonghwasa Temple on Mireuksan Mountain in Tongyeong. This site used to be the location of the house where master painter Jeon Hyuck-lim lived for about 30 years since 1975. A new building was constructed and the site was turned into a creative space, opening to the public on May 11, 2003.

The outer walls of the building is decorated with the master painter’s paintings and his son Yeonggeun’s paintings which were selected from among their works and reproduced by utilizing about 7,500 20x20cm ceramic tiles, with a view to represent the image of Tongyeong and the artistic image of the master painter. In particular, the front wall on the third floor is a reproduction of the great artist’s work titled “Window” painted in 1992.

Yours Guest House is a foreigner-only guesthouse in a residential area of Mireuk Island, Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do. All guestrooms are ondol style, with 1-3 person rooms on the 1st floor and 4-person family rooms on the 2nd floor. Except for single rooms, all rooms have private bathrooms, and all rooms are equipped with TV. There is a shared kitchen, toilet, bathroom, and terrace. A self- buffet breakfast is provided. It is possible to book the whole guesthouse for large parties: please ask ahead. Tongyeong Cable Car platform, the Skyline Luge, and the Dancing Sea Fountain are all within a 10-minute walk.

Dadama Haemul Ttukbaegi is the pride of Tongyeong and a famous restaurant where visitors can eat seafood to their heart’s content. The representative menu is haemul ttukbaegi (seafood hot pot), a dish that uses spicy red pepper powder seasoning for the spicy taste and seafood broth cooked in ttukbaegi (thick earthen pot used for hot stew or soup) with scallops, abalone, crabs, and octopus. The restaurant offers three menu sets of A, B, and C, allowing visitors to taste various dishes to suit their taste. Set A features Tongyeong’s fresh seafood menu and mainly consists of haemul ttukbaegi, grilled fish, bajirak muchim (clam salad), and meonggae bibimbap (sea pineapple bibimbap); Set B consists of haemul ttukbaegi and grilled fish; and Set C mainly features anchovy dishes. They also use seasonal ingredients, like oysters in winter.

Situated in the middle of Mireukdo Island on the southern part of Tongyeong, Mireuksan Mountain (altitude 458.4 meters) is also sometimes referred to as Yonghwasan Mountain after Yonghwasa Temple. Additional temples on the mountain include the more secluded Gwaneumam and Dosoram Hermitages, as well as Miraesa Temple. While not as tall as other mountains, it is famous for its lush forest, valleys with pure water, odd-shaped rocks, and rock caves. The mountain is beautiful year round with royal azalea in spring, bright foliage in fall, and breathtaking views of the Korean archipelago.

Located on Cheonamsan Mountain near the southwestern sea of Tongyeong, Tongyeong Ecological Forest is full of the Hinoki cypress trees. The Great Battle of Hansan was a war in which Admiral Yi Sun-sin and his naval forces fought against the Japanese and won a great victory off Hansando Island in Tongyeong. The Great Battle of Hansan Festival commemorates the victory and Yi’s spirit of patriotism. The festival reenacts the Samdo (Chungcheong, Jeolla, and Gyeongsang Provinces) naval guard changing ceremony and inspection, as well as the navy personnel’s march and training. The Turtle Ship and local fishing boats are set afloat off Hansando Island, lining up in the shape of a crane’s wing, which was the famous military tactic of the Great Battle. Visitors can enjoy a splendid view of fireworks over the dark sea and join in the Turtle Ship rowing competition, a popular activity that requires team effort.
