The 65th Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival is one of Korea’s leading patriotic history and cultural festivals, commemorating the victory at the Battle of Hansan, one of the three great naval victories of the Imjin War, and honoring the spirit and leadership of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Held throughout Tongyeong around the anniversary of the victory, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month (August 14 in 2026), the festival features programs that bring this historic event to life, including a reenactment of the Battle of Hansan, the Parade of the Three Provinces Naval Commander, the departure ceremony, and a victory homecoming ceremony. Visitors of all ages can enjoy traditional cultural experiences, performances, exhibitions, marine leisure activities, media content, and nighttime programs. Set against Tongyeong’s beautiful coastline and rich historical heritage, the festival blends tradition and modern creativity while continuing to grow as a globally recognized festival of history and patriotic remembrance.

Sebyeonggwan Hall, located in Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, was established in 1605 by the 6th generation commander-in-chief Lee Kyung-jun and is well known as one of the widest buildings of the Joseon period along with Gyeonghoeru Pavilion in Gyeongbokgung Palace and Jinnamgwan Hall in Yeosu-si.

Sebyeonggwan Hall is placed at the foot of Yeohwangsan Mountain and overlooks Tongyeong. Right next to the hall are the remains of the naval base Tongjeyeong, which includes Unjudang (also called Jeseungdang, a military education center for the Joseon Navy) among others.

Sebyeonggwan Hall symbolizes the ending of the war, the washing away and cleaning up of the weapons of war.

Chungnyeolsa Shrine in Tongyeong is dedicated to Admiral Yi Sun-sin, a national hero whose naval victories were crucial in repelling Japanese invasions of Korea in the 1590s. The shrine complex includes Dongjae and Seojae, where ritual ceremonies are prepared; a main shrine housing his spirit tablet and portrait; and an exhibit hall showcasing artifacts related to the Japanese Invasion of 1592. Rituals honoring the Admiral continue to be held every spring and fall to this day.

Constructed over a 16-month period from 1931 to 1932, the undersea tunnel in Tongyeong is Asia’s first submarine tunnel. For its construction, the sea water was blocked at both ends, the tunnel was dug underground, and was paved with concrete. The Korean word “Yongmundalyang” engraved at the entrance of this 483-meter long, 5-meter wide tunnel means “the entrance of an undersea tunnel that connects island to land.”

Yours Guest House is a foreigner-only guesthouse in a residential area of Mireuk Island, Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do. All guestrooms are ondol style, with 1-3 person rooms on the 1st floor and 4-person family rooms on the 2nd floor. Except for single rooms, all rooms have private bathrooms, and all rooms are equipped with TV.  There is a shared kitchen, toilet, bathroom, and terrace. A self- buffet breakfast is provided. It is possible to book the whole guesthouse for large parties: please ask ahead. Tongyeong Cable Car platform, the Skyline Luge, and the Dancing Sea Fountain are all within a 10-minute walk.

It’s rare to find a restaurant in Tongyeong that serves oysters all year round. However, Tongyeong GulMadang offers oysters all year round. Its most popular menu is the set menu, which includes gul bossam (napa wraps with pork and oyster), guljeon (oyster pancakes), and gul yeongyang dolsotbap (nutritious oyster hot stone pot rice), and other oyster dishes.
