– Program
The title INCONVENIENT CONVENIENCE STORE itself provokes your curiosity. Convenience stores are supposed to be places of comfort and convenience, but what kind of story is this? To find out, you may want to read the original novel of the same name.
The INCONVENIENT CONVENIENCE STORE is one of the most popular Korean novels of recent years. It was the most sold book in Korea in 2022 at Kyobo Bookstore and has sold over 1.7 million copies to date. Been exported to 42 countries around the world, it can be read in English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and other languages.
The play follows most of the original setting. Yeom Young-sook, in her 70s, runs a convenience store in Cheongpa-dong, Seoul. She hires Dokgo, a homeless alcoholic who helped her at Seoul Station, as a part-time worker in her convenience store. The stuttering clerk is an uncomfortable presence for the store’s customers, but he becomes a energy-giver as he sincerely interacts with the regulars.
It was produced by the same crew that turned the author’s another novel, The Mangwon-dong Brothers, into a play – a perfect partnership between author and crew. They use the musical drama format, which is halfway between a play and a musical, to bring out the strengths of the original story.
